Our
Story
In 1963, an organization called The Pavilion Heights Community Association was formed in Pierrefonds. It was a non-profit, non-political organization with the primary objective to cater to the social and recreational requirements of the area residents. Over the years, this group held many activities, such as dances, field days, parades, Christmas parties, winter carnivals, sugaring off events and more. They offered many sports activities for the community including, but not limited to, skating, hockey, track and field events as well as softball. In 1969, an outdoor curling rink was created, said to be the first of its kind in Quebec.

In the winter of 1973, the President of the Pavilion Heights Community Association, met with then Mayor of Pierrefonds, Cy McDonald, to seek the construction of a lawn bowling green. Without hesitation, it was agreed that a plot of land suitable for the green would be sought right away. The following day, measurements were being taken in the waist-high snow on the land that currently serves as today’s green.

In 1975, the first lawn bowling club in the West Island held its grand opening. In August of that year, The Association submitted a grant to the City for the construction of a recreational centre. In the meantime, the Association approached the city in 1976 for permission to have an abandoned wooden chalet, located some blocks away, moved to the lawn bowling green for the use of a club house. A foundation was built, and the chalet was moved to the site of the green. After a post-move inspection of the chalet revealed that the structure was not stable, it had to be demolished!

In 1978, the Pavilion Heights Lawn Bowling Club was renamed Pierrefonds Lawn Bowling Club. In 1982, the Club was advised that the City had obtained the funds necessary to build a new clubhouse, and construction was begun the following year. The building was completed in 1984 and a balcony was added in 1985.

The pivotal person responsible for the establishment, creation and success of the Pierrefonds Lawn Bowling Club was none other than our first president, Mr. James I. Dow.
